As a poet, Burns wrote with deceptive simplicity and imaginative sympathy, and demonstrated enormous range - from comic dramatic monologues such as Holy Willies Prayer, which mocks hypocrisy, to narratives including the celebrated Tam O Shanter, about the ghostly visions of a drunk
